Description
Starting at the train station in Tralee, the Greenway runs 13.6km to Fenit ending at the playground / beach.
There are a couple of main entrances from the Tralee end namely:
- 1st Point: opposite the train station on Edward Street
- 2nd Point: beside Top Part Motor Factors on Rock Street
- 3rd Point: Mounthawk entrance off Bracker O’Regan Road (in map image above).
From Mounthawk you then make your way through the countryside and along the Coast to Fenit.
Journey Time from Train Station:
Walking: Circa 3 hours one way. If you start at Mounthawk it’s about 45 minutes less.
Cycling: Â Circa 1 hour (2 hour round trip).
May take longer with kids depending on how fast they can go.
Stops:
The Spa is a good half-way point. It’s about a 7-10 minute walk off The Greenway. The Oyster Tavern does lovely food and drinks. Alternatively just over the road Spa Seafoods has picnic benches outside.
The Tankard Bar is also a good option. It’s about a 50 minute walk from Fenit playground or 1hr 50mins from Mounthawk.
Some Shorter Options:
-> Walk from Mounthawk to Lassinagh (exit for The Spa) and back. Circa 2 hour round trip.
-> Train Station to Mounthawk is circa a 45-50 minute walk. Not really scenic but a safe option with kids. Popular with locals for easy weekend or evening stroll. Coffee at pik-up in Mounthawk or at train station kiosk (both really good coffee). In Summer there are often ducks along the river just at the train station entrance.
-> Fenit to The Tankard Bar (or continue on to The Spa).
I love the Fenit end mainly due to proximity to playground, beach and bathrooms. Plus there are water sports and boat tours in Fenit so plenty to fill a weekend break.
